If you’re looking to spice up your phone’s sound effects, check out Nokia’s Audio Themes page. There’s currently a good 20 themes that can change your default sounds to something more pleasurable. Free of course.

Audio themes feature allows you to personalize the user interface sounds of your phone. Audio themes are offered in packages which contain several sound files of a common theme. The packages contain usually the normal profile sounds (e.g. ringing tones, message alerts, clock alert, calendar alarm) but also sounds for phone handling (e.g. fold open, fold close) and menu events (enter menu, leave menu).

Your phone supports audio themes if you can find this icon in the menu (personalization/themes). If your phone supports audio themes you can download additional theme packages from this page.

Installation

If you’ve ever played Grand Theft Auto, or perhaps Urban Chaos on your PC, you’ll realize the similarities between those two games and the mobile game Saint’s Row. Saint’s Row puts you in the shoes of a recruit gangster, in a mob that’s hell bent of ruling district after district. It’s your job to see that accomplished, by completing mission after mission which are thrown at you.

THQ Mobile’s release, Saint’s Row’s gameplay, is interesting to say at the very least. Each district is distinct, and pretty big for exploration. You can either choose to walk around the city, or hijack a car, and drive. There’re places in the city where you can buy weapons, and even a garage to store your cars , which can then be used for racing in the game too! Missions include assassinations, package delivery (which is really a race against time to get to a certain place), and more.

S60 Phone Shortcut List

The quickest way to add a carriage return (enter key basically) to your text messages/notes: just hit the 0 (zero) button three times. So simple, yet so effective.

So that got me a little excited (that was something I’d been trying to figure out for ages), and thinking at the same time. Which resulted in the idea for this entry: the continually updating S60 phone shortcut post. Some of these will probably be pretty well known already, but I’m hoping it’ll be a nice reference for all.

General

Voice Activated Dialing: Hold down the right softkey for 2 seconds.

Task Switcher/S60 Alt-Tab Key: Hold down the menu key.

Switch Between Silent and General Profiles: Hold down the # (pound) key. Only works on certain phones.

Read Text Messages (Out Loud): Hold down the left softkey. (works on N81, E66, probably most S60 phones)

Speed Dial: Hold down the corresponding keypad number or hit the number and then the Send key. Voice mail is always the 1 key.

Quick Dial Contact at SIM Position: This is a tricky one. If you enter a number followed by the # (pound) key, it’ll automatically insert the phone number for that person stored on your SIM. Ie. 1# will show the first person’s phone number in your SIM directory, 2# would show the second one, etc…Not sure how useful this is unless you go around memorizing your SIM directory.

Switch Bluetooth On/Off: Hold the * key at the idle screen. (works on E66, recent S60 phones)

Text Entry and Selecting Items

Quick Copy and Paste: At any text entry screen (Notes, etc), hold down the # (pound) key and hit the left or right arrow keys to create a selection box. While still holding down the pound key, you can press the left softkey to copy the text. # + right softkey will paste your copied selection.

Quick Carriage Return: Hit 0 (Zero) key three times and wait or continue typing.

Quick Mark or Quick Selection: Hit the # (pound) key in a list to mark that item, or keep the # key held down while using the up/down arrow keys to select multiple items. Works in messaging inbox, contacts, etc.

Browser

Quick Open Web Browser: Hold down the 0 (zero) key.

Quick Toolbar: Hold down the center key (center softkey) to display the menu toolbar with page history, page overview, refresh, and find.

Bookmarks: Press the 1 key while browsing.

Quick Find: Press the 2 key while browsing.

Page Overview: Press the 8 key while browsing.

Show Address Bar: Press the 9 key while browsing.

Bypass the SP lock
With a Nokia 16xx/21xx/31xx/51xx/81xx that are SIM locked to one provider you can bypass the SP lock like this:
1: Insert sim card of different provider.
2: Turn on the phone and press the UP VOLUME key for 3 sec. then release it and the phone says PIN CODE?
3: Press the "C" key.
4: Then Press * and wait until it disappears and appears again, then press * one more time and 04*PIN*PIN*PIN#

The phone should now say : PIN CODE CHANGED (or ACCEPTED) and the SIM card is accepted until you restart the phone again.
NOTE: On version 5.04 Nokia has removed this option.

Fast silent mode
In the newer versions (v.7.11 or higher) a quick silent mode can by entered. Press Menu then #.

The 54# Tip:

Network Monitor
There is a hidden menu inside your Nokia phone. If you want to activate it, you'll have to re-program some chips inside of your phone or the easier way is by using the Software Pclocals and the MBUS cable.

with reprogramming:

1.Check your software version. You can only continue if you have v4.33, v4.73 or v5.24.
2.Take apart the phone.
3. De-solder the EEPROM (ATMEL AT 24C64).
4. Read out the data with an EEPROM programmer and save it to a file (Backup).
5. If you have v.33 or v4.73, change the address "03B8" from "00" to "FF".
6. If you have v5.24 then change the address "0378" from "00" to "FF".
7. Write the new data to the EEPROM and solder it back to the phone.
8. Power on your phone and you should have "Netmonitor" enabled.

with Software Pclocals:

1. You'll need an MBUS cable and Pclocals.zip. (To get this file, please search web)
2. After the splash screen of the program, you'll have to set-up the com port where your cable is attached.

The James Bond Trick
If you short-circuit the left middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all connections touching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the headset profile and set the ringing volume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Just place it under a table in a room and call it. The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are saying.

Service Prover Lock
The service provider (SP) lock is used to lock the cell phone to the SP's SIM card. Once the cell phone is locked to a specific operator, if one inserts a SIM card from a different operator the phone will refuse to accept it! The cell phone will however accept another SIM card from the same operator.

All Nokia phones (2110 and newer) have four different SIM locks which can be used to lock the phone for up to 4 different providers. But most phones with restriction only have one lock activated. ( lock 1)

The Reboot Trick
Should work on all software versions.
1. Go to calendar (menu - 8)
2. Make note / reminder
3. Enter some text into the edit box
4. Hold clear until whole text is cleared, then press Back
5. Press 0. Main screen is shown but a space appears on the screen. You can't see it of course.
6. Enter 4 digits (1234, for example)
7. Use the down arrow to move the cursor to the left side of the numbers and the space (2 times down arrow)

How to open lock 1 and 4

You will need Winlock software and a MBUS cable to do this. Winlock is a Nokia service program that you can use to open lock 1 and 4, really you are closing locks when you do that, but when you write ????? at MCC+MNC and MSIN text box, the phone don't understand it and consider that it's open.
That trick only works for lock 1 and 4, but not for lock 2 and 3.

1. Install winlock 1.10
2. Connect your MBUS Nokia data cable
3. Run Winlock
4. Push Read Phone, if you have Lock 2 or Lock 3 closed you can not open your phone, but you can try change Lock 2.
5. Select State Close in Lock 1 and Lock 4, fill out MCC+MNC and MSIN text boxes with ??????? and Push Close Locks.
6. Now you can use any operator card in your phone.

If you get any error when you do that do the following steps :
Select State Automatic in Lock 1 and Lock 4 and change type to User in Lock 1 and Lock 4, fill out MCC+MNC and MSIN text boxes with ?????????? and Push Close Locks.
- Select State Automatic in Lock 1 and Lock 4 and change type to Factory in Lock 1 and Lock 4, fill out MCC+MNC and MSIN text boxes with ?????????? and Push Close Locks.
- If you continue getting errors you must turn off your phone and reset computer and try again.

How to open lock 2
When operators companies close lock2 you can only use the contract or prepaid card for this operator, but you can use another operator company prepaid card if you know what GID1 must write.

1. Install Winlock
2. Run Winlock
3. Configure Winlock. Select menu Winlock->Defaults and change GID byte count to 2.
4. Push Read Phone, and write down GID1 info that appear in lock 2.
5. Insert the prepaid card from a different operator company.
6. We must find out a the GID1 info adequate for our new prepaid or contract card, take a look at our GID1 list and check if your operator and SIM card type is included, if not try to get a phone that have lock 2 closed and have the SIM card type that you want to use in your phone, and read GID1 info with winlock. You can try to write the most used GID1 codes like 0000,10FF,01FF, or FFFF, etc.
7. Change Lock 2 Type from User To Factory or from Factory to User.
8. Push Close Locks
9. Your phone will be reset every time you push Close Locks, if your card is not accepted the GID1 is not correct, repeat from step 4 until you find the correct GID1.
10. If you get error you must turn off your phone and reset computer and try again.
11. If you want your phone accept your original prepaid card write in GID1 the code you read at step 2 and close locks.

Bypass the SP lock

Crazy 5110
Send a SMS full of . (dots) the it'll go crazy when you scroll the received message in your 5110. It doesn't do any permanent damage...it only goes crazy if you scroll the SMS. I'm not sure if it works with all of the software version but it works with 4.59.

NHE-8 has something to do with the type of phone you are dealing with. Is it GSM 900 (standard), GSM 1800 (DCS1800) or GSM 1900 (PCS1900)? Nokia 2110, 3110, 8110(i) are all NHE types. The only thing that vary is the code after NHE- ("8"). NHE = GSM 900, NHK =GSM 1800 - The number in the end = the model (2110i = 4 etc.) The 5110 and 6110 is called NSE-1 and NSE-3...this may be because it supports EFR (?)

Software update, how?
I have been asked a lot about how to update the software in your cell phones. The easiest thing to do is to go to the nearest Nokia dealer and make him do it for you. Just remember that it is supposed to be free (a receipt is required) so don't let him tell you anything else!

Bypass the SP lock
With a Nokia 16xx/21xx/31xx/51xx/81xx that are SIM locked to one provider you can bypass the SP lock like this:
1: Insert sim card of different provider.
2: Turn on the phone and press the UP VOLUME key for 3 sec. then release it and the phone says PIN CODE?
3: Press the "C" key.
4: Then Press * and wait until it disappear and appear again, then press * one more time and 04*PIN*PIN*PIN#

The phone now says: PIN CODE CHANGED (or ACCEPTED) and the SIM card is accepted until you restart the phone again. NOTE: On version 5.04 Nokia has removed this option !

The 54# Tip:
Type 1#, 2#........54# on the keypad (when you're not in the menu) to get the phone number used for with this key when speed dialing.

Update from 8110 >8110i impossible....
Even though NHE-6 is found on the backside of 8110 too an update from that phone to the 8110i is impossible. The reason is simple. The hardware is different which means that the SW capacity in 8110i is bigger than the 8110.

Original Ringtone
If you want the original ringtone back after you have downloaded one you can send a message to yourself containing the text: //SCKL1581 After some time you will receive a message that you can save, and your original Nokia ringtone is back.

What's a Business Card?
A business card is a special SMS message which is composed as following: //SCKE2 BEGIN:VCARD N:name TEL:number END:VCARD

Hands Free tip
To continue an existing call when placing the 8110i into the hands free car kit without it dropping the call, press the Memory button just before connecting the cable and placing it in the cradle.

Display extra text in call costs feature tip
If your network operator doesn't offer a call costs service, you can still make use of that function to display some personalized text on the screen of your 8110i. Go to Menu, [5], [7], [1], enter PIN2-code and choose Set. Then type in the limit of the currency units you're using (if the call cost service worked, you would have to type the cost limit of the calls) and choose OK. In this case I typed 8110. Then go to the next sub menu (Menu, [5], [7], [2]), the Show costs in menu. Type in the PIN2 code again and select Currency. Type in the unit price, in this case number 1. Then type the name of the currency - you can use any string of letters and numbers 1-3 characters long. then type 2 letter then to confirm type two names beginning with one of each of the letters. Then press OK to confirm it.

Quick saving while in call tip
Saving numbers to memory during a call If you type a number into your phone during a call, you will lose it when the call ends. To prevent this happening just hold down Memory button -- the number will be saved (with no name) to the next available memory location.

Deleting SMS messages quickly tip
When reading an SMS message, instead of pressing Option, Erase to delete the message, simply press [C].

Turning lights on temporarily tip
If you have display lights turned off, you can turn them on by quickly pressing and releasing the power button. They will stay on as long as you are pressing button.

Silent mode temporarily tip
You can put your phone into silent ringing mode temporarily by pressing Menu then [#].

Closing the cover without ending a call tip
If you press the menu key and then close the sliding cover during a call you will not end your call.

Turning lights on temporarily tip

Free Call Tip
NB. The tips needs Net Monitor enabled. Be aware that the trick will remove Netmonitor in some sw versions like v4.73, v5.04 and v5.24.

Bluetooth can come really handy when you want to back up mobile data. Whether you have some really important celebrity contacts on your cellphone, or just want to gadget-play, here's how it goes:

* Make sure you have the Bluetooth hardware and its drivers installed properly on your mobile phone. Recommended: check for new drivers updates.

* Switch on the Bluetooth feature on your mobile phone and make sure that it can be seen by other devices.

* On your Windows system, go to control panel, then choose Bluetooth devices.
